Video of the Day 1 Times
Featuring:
Annihilator, BillyNasty, Black-Widow, Chicane, Crave, Dole, Dot, eXec, Gl!m, illusion, J][n, Spike
Description:
For this 5th movie, I gave other players the chance to send their demo's in for use in this movie. The criteria were demolition gametype and normal damage. I received about 125 demo's and i made a selection out of it, and added a couple of demo's of myself.
A part of this movie contains synching at a level I haven't seen before in a SoF2 movie. This part doesn't have gamesound, because that would make the synching less obvious.
In short: some nice frags at a great gametype, partly synched to the music, enjoy!

wow, thank god, out of the three movies, finally, somebody who knows what they're doing with a computer
First of all I want to say that Chicane, you have the potential to make a really great video, you really do. You have enough knowledge of video editing and the programs you use to make something really great...however...you are just lacking the vision; also, you compromise to easily and needlessly limit yourself in doing so. Get a photoshop guy, dont be embarrased cause you suck at it, get somebody to make graphics for your movie; that alone would make them way better. Just a plain white box with some arial text in it to display the names is kinda lame, if you had somebody who knew what they were doing with photoshop help you make the black areas where you display text it would be a lot less distracting from the video and really improve on the overall professional look of the video. (yes I know...you're not a pro) Also, dont just use arial font for everything, like I said, get a graphics guy to help you make text effect and new fonts and better colors/color schemes, that kind of stuff. When I say you dont have vision I mean that some of the effects were well done and all, fit right in with the video, but they were just...kinda lame. Like typing the commands at the top of the screen "s_volume 1" and that type of thing, I thought that was kinda dumb, however your timing with them and the fact that you recognized that you needed a transition was good. Maybe get your graphics guy (the one you're gonna get :) ) make some sort of a volume control lookin thing that you can show going up as you pause the demo, switch to thrid person, do a quick swoop around the player with accompanying wooshing sounds, and then go back to the action in full speed with in game sound, that would be kick ass, and I know you have the editing skill to do it.
The content was both good and bad. Some real skill was shown, however, it was mostly masked because it was surrounded by merely average, lucky, stupid, or just plain bad content. Pick your shots more carefully, people like to watch skill, not just dumb luck, and its easy to discern the two. Also, dont stick stupid content into the middle of the action. No scopes, knives, pistols, and bayonettes have a place, but they shouldn't be just randomly mixed in with the good content. That kind of thing is usually used as a break from the action of the movie, generally during or after the credits after the music changes and you get that relieved feeling after watching a truely good movie. Some light music or funny content from TS or Ventrillo, or maybe a shoutcast, I always thought really added to that sort of thing, you can even do that in the middle of the video, but you need a clear transition to it, you can't just mix the two. Also some of the content was just bad, one of the guys seemed to have issuses with people's feet, he kept shooting at them.
The music I thought wasn't very fitting with the movie, but since you synchronized the action to sound decently it didn't really detract from the video, however it really didn't add anything either, which is what keeps this as merely a mediocure video with potential rather then a good video in my mind.
Quality was good, maybe tweak the colors/brightness just a bit to get it to have more of an in-game type of feel. It always seems like sof2 videos are over contrasted for some reason...
Editing was good, but could have been better with just some small tweaks. Use more effects. Normally I wouldn't say that, but you really need it, everything looks the same pretty much throughout the whole video, we need some eye candy, bust out the filters sometimes, use more slow mo, or at least use it more effectively. Same with recams. Also don't limit yourself by the game commands. My biggest problem was the use of r_shownormals, it was a good idea, but lets face it, that command looks stupid, period. Download a freakin wallhack and add some effects to it so it looks cool, nobody will accuse you of cheating if you use it for the video and it looks kick ass, the whole white line jutting out of everywhere just doesn't do it for me. Also, on recams, you need some sort of filter or effect so it's easily discernable from the noral content, blur the recam, adjust the colors, do something, just so there is a transition.
That's really all I can think of right now, I'm sorry if I sound like a hard ass, I'm really just trying to help you, I really am. I can tell you can do great things if you just fine tune your skills and think more about synchronization and transitions, not just literal synchronization, but placing certain content to certain music, or using a certain style of editing depending on the music, the almost "subliminal" type of editing that happens in great movies
keep up the good work and dont hate me for being overly critical because I only do it out of love :)

very nice movie Chicane.. one of your best..
edit: [x] the quality was very good. nice strong colours and the best ive seen in a sof2 movie. ever. [x]The cams and recams was very good. you get more out of a movie when u do that and i enjoyed it completely. [x]the intro was different and rare and i quite liked it. so was the synching at the start, it really got me into the movie. [x] about the guy that said u have little effects, i disagree. He have recams, synching, he have slowmotion in a part of the movie, he have the names of killers and killed, he shows us info everytime somthng new was gonna happend and he had both fastpaced action and easy, beautifull killing synched to the bone. It had very much and i know at the next movie( if?) u have to use all of that, be better at photoshop, make it more "pro" even though its public( witch i liked, cus the public recognices themself ( i'm in the movie, Murdera alias Ann!hi1ator : b ). so that was a big plus for me. [x]config was great. very good
[-] the photoshop underline in the movie cud av been better( u know it too) [-]the last song (3/3) wsnt so good, cus av gotten a better song there, otherwise the others was remarkable good and fit well. [-]its hard to find enything more to be bad in this movie! : D
the colours and outro cus av been better at the extras( not the ingame movie, but the things besides that, like the photoshop things and outro text, etc. You showed other players in other games that sof2 is a good graphix game, speedy, entertaining and showed us at the scene in demo that the comunity rox and we must continue to play. :)
graphix= 9/10 (ingame good, extras cud av been better. effects=8/10tried something new and had many extras wittch was a nice add to the full movie. likeable=8/10 (music if it fit the movie and the fast/slow pace if it fit) all in all a good movie, keeper, top standard, one of the ebst in sof2, chicane mate goood job :D 8.5/10 (and 9 and 10 is rarely in my book)

i agree with spoon on several points. the potential is there, but as a 5th movie these "kinda" of kills are unaceptible.
[what intro?] it's the part at the beggining of the movie. i could show you how to do one. it's easy u know. |

Thanks for your comments people. Glad to hear most liked it:) As for the content, yeah defenately not everything showed top-skills. That wasn't my aim for this movie anyway. I like to have some non-serious frags in it too. The balance might have been too much on the "rare" or lucky type of frags in stead of the skilled ones.
Music is taste, i love the songs and especially on the first song i felt i could do some nice synching on it. If i make another one, it could be some style of rock again, not thinking about that now.
Spoonraker, thanks for your very long analysis. If you hated me or the movie, you wouldn't type that many words on it:) I didn't respond earlier because i simply didn't have the time to do so.
About letting others do things for my movie. Is an option, but im probably selfish, and i want my movie completely edited by myself (also if it sucks more) . In fact, asking for demo's from others was quite a step for me. I'll consider the options though, but i'm learning photoshop and a few other things myself soon too, so i might improve on that myself too. Is mixing TS in a movie still original? I'll think about it, and think around it.
Color/brightnesstweaking. My playing cfg hardly differs from my movie cfg except for the gamma. In fact: on a small sof2 lan, people asked me how i got sof2 as nice looking as i had. So actually i don't understand what should be different about it, can you explain that? (using the word tweaking can mean both more and less).
Again thanks for posting, i will re-read this if im busy editing another movie:)

overview of my movies, useful links, best quality settings for SoF2, handling (sof2) sounds before and in premiere

wow chicane
everytime I'm saying this, but they are getting better and better every time :)
The music sync is very well done, the dev-mode is very cool to see, the little movie over movie thing (you know what I mean) rox :D
very nice intro, good looking actors! :P
hopefully my sof will work fine (somehow) and I can make some demo's aswell
or you have to extend your horizon and go for another game, like cs: source (that games still works for me)
conclusion: a MUST download and watch multiple times kick-ass video!!!

when I said that the colors in most sof2 movies looked bad, I didn't mean the config was bad.
When you use /cl_avidemo in sof2 to render screenshots, the screenshots look nothing like in game, which is why you have to brighten them and stuff in the video editor or photoshop before you make your video. The config was probably fine, but when you adjusted the color on the screenshots in the editing program, they just look slightly off. Yours wasn't as bad as some I've seen, but it just seems like everybody leaves too much contrast, like on jor1 everyting is super yellowish and then the blue team looks nearly black all the time instead of green like you see them in game. Your video did a good job of not doing this, but there were times when it just looked off, and others when it looked fine.
That's just a tiny thing though, biggest thing for me is you need to work on your photoshop and effects. Like at about 4:22, that green arrow pointing out your team mate, that was just bad, no offense, it looked silly, like it was done in paint or something. The black areas need a lot of work to, just having a white box with the players name in plain arial font looks bland. Just a simple font change could drasitcally improve that, maybe work on the white box, or just take it out. Use a different font for the killed players, and for everything in general.
The intro/outro were pretty weak, mostly because they were so plain looking. Biggest thing was the bland arial font used on everything throughout the movie. Also the music could improve the intro/outro a lot. For the main content, whatever....but there are just some songs that work well for intros, they have a lot of contrast in dynamics and change tempos and whatnot so that they can have some powerful synching done with them.
Basically just make everything look cooler, music is personal preference, but at least for the intro/outro I think there are better selections. Change stuff up, after a while the video was dragging a little bit, then you added in game sound which helped to keep the interest. Add more stuff to that. Work on the recams, add filters or something to them to distinguish from normal content and bring attention to them. Oh and the whole separating serious and funny content thing...basically what I said before, I dunno why I wrote so much this time
Oh and are you making another movie? I'm sure I could help in the content department with some demos :) |
