I was introduced to fraps eaarlier today and found that it lagged my system when turned on. Also, when recording it just stopped, is there a time limit or something? If there is something better than fraps out there then lpease tell me!
This may seem a lil off subject but i just dont understand the editing tuturials on this page. I have been making skate vids and stuff like that for around 2 years, so ive used software, but this is all different. IF anyone could kinda put it into nub terms, it would be of great help.
Sry im so nub and am pry making u answer questions allready asked. But i really want to become better at this! |

hm.. first you need to capture directly from demos, and not from games.. because your machine won't take it :) or get 2 pc's connected but that's an expensive solution. So record your demos and then do that . After you need to know if you can do something like 'timescale' so you can speed down like 25% and capture at 4second the 30fps or something (7.5 fps per second x 4 = 30).
Then you also need to find out if you can limit the fps you get because if you send 10fps fraps will only get 10 fps :) or you can combine like maxfps 15 and timescale 50% and you get a good avi ;)
edit: if you have more doubts say because its dificult to explain at the first time

I dont think you need to adjust the FPS to get a good framerate, ill record with fraps ingame with 30 fps and as long my in game frame rate is 30+ i get a nice speed. But if you really want quality framerate i belive theres other better programs then fraps :).
This 4*7.5 stuff sounds like a way to mess the mess it up. But i really dont know :) The time limit might be if u use the trail version or if you ran out of drivespace.

Just a note - fraps is by far the best.
you can also take advantage of dual cores.. As well as that, a g15 keyboard lets you know if you ever drop frames - it has a realtime display of your fps without it being on the moniter.
I found the biggest bottleneck is your harddrive - I have gone through 1.2 gig to record a one minute clip at the 1024 x 768 resolution I play in (which is admittedly pretty good!)
I find that my Battlefield 2 game runs at approx 70 fps during a game at max everything (including x-fi audio - wow!) on 1024 x 768. When I go to record, I set it to go at 25fps... the extra resolution is great for cropping shots and not being afraid of losing quality :)
there are other programs (GameCam comes to mind), but its not as optimized, and eats more cpu as it lets you choose your codec - uncompressed is too big, and something like xvid is lossy and eats too much cpu :/ )
Heres an example of what fraps + premiere editing can do:

ZD Soft Game Recorder lets you choose resolution, format and codec instead of Fraps's downsizing if you're recording in more than 1280x800.

If you're using the Source engine, you can use its built-in recorder. More info here: http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=148196 I think the tutorial is for Garry's Mod...but applies to any Source game.

I also stopped Demo recording via Fraps.
It needs to much System Power and the Quality isn't so good as in avidemo

If you use fraps you should at least start by verifying (with a test
clip) that your computer is fast enough to capture the desired FPS in
real time, otherwise you could end up with really jerky movements in
the movie.
I would strongly recommend that you use the built in cl_avidemo feature instead of fraps though. It does take a bit more work, but it usually produces much better results. (There's lots of guides on the 'net, for example this one.) |

tested something. most of the computers take some good fraps capture, if its not some crysislike shit, what u are capturing. the problem in most cases is the hdd writing limit.
my old pcs hdd wasnt able to capture more then 12fps from 1280*1024... my new pcs western digital made 37fps on that resulution... my new pcs read 0 pair should be able to capture 60fps there, but u need to substract 5fps to get your fps stable. thanks to latest anti analysing procedures u can capture the resolution u are using directly now.
maybe u need a faster hdd and a more modern graphics card.
lets say some western digital hdd for 60€ and an hd3870 for 160€. that will provide u with 40fps on 1024 or 30 on 1280 with a very fine picture :)

Using the built in capture command (which most games have) you can save yourself € 220. The high quality movies here have been made a little while to a longer while ago, when HDD's weren't as fast as today's, and video cards weren't as fast.
I think jrb used a 6800 GT when he recorded iT2, and even before that he recorded some 1000 fps scenes for his 4K Revolution movie (2003).
If you slow down the game by using the built in screenshot recorder, you don't need a really fast PC (by today's standards).
[on the other hand] it is possible to get reasonable quality by using fraps but it is not the preferred way for most editors. Most consider fraps a "quick & dirty" movie maker which is handy in some situations. |
