I. Introduction:
This tutorial is based on my knowladge that i got essencially by surfing own-age.com :) A site dedicated to video editing which can help beginners, advanced and experts.. wait, experts only help ;) I'm Tânia, currently making 3 quake3 movies and since the goal of them was to reach quality, i had to learn everything from 0..
This tutorial will guide people into the different steps which a movie takes place! I will not discribe all the details, i wont lose time doing it, since there are many threads which explain all.. i will try to use references to other tutorials made by others in a given time (if they allow) and i'll be precise and direct (meaning that if you follow this tutorial, you will have to work a bit too).
This tutorial is not made to be the best nor it shows the best way to do a movie! This is how i’m doing and my feelings toward “quality” to make a top movie nowadays, because each person has it’s own ways to make it better for him/herself.
Spookmineer helped me by sharing a mail he had sent a friend teatching him how to do movies, some links were given by him :)

II. Requesits:
You need a moreless up-to-date computer, because to take care of video images with effects, demos extractions, etc it is essencial that you don’t bite your nails for long holds. If you decide that you don’t mind waiting and still want to do a movie, i would advise a 3-5m movie before trying to do a long one! Well, to get the top quality images you only really need a good graphic card and a large monitor for a high resolution hq screenshots (but if you don’t have a large monitor, nowadays a decent graphic card is reachable to most pockets and the final result can be very nice too).
You also need video tools, some are free (will give names later), most you have to pay big bucks for them! More info will be given in topic V. Also you need a soundcard, and it would be advised to have 80gb+ free (depending on your movie size, 40gb you can do it too with some other tools).

III. Structure:
Well before you start thinking on your movie, download around 30 top movies from 3-4 different games, own-age is the right place for you to do it, lots of regular movie watchers make very rich comments on movies which you can learn from that to see what people want (but keep in mind that many others just spam, or trashtalk).

If you think that they are easy/not new.. then you’re probably not reading this tutorial anyway :P These movies are very hard to acomplish and even if things seem easy.. they’re not ;)
Now start thinking about your movie, what do you want to do? If you play a game, it would be fun to make your own movie no? For that you can check my advices on how to collect footage! If you don’t play, get in the gaming scene and try to find clan’s who want a video editor, or just go to demo sites like esreality and choose the best demos from pro’s (but this means more work for you). A good thing that i’m trying to put in your head is that a movie is not all frags, in my opinion if i have a movie only with frags, i rather have the demos and watch them in my hq config! For me a movie needs to be creative and pushed for effects (because effects is what gives your movie a signature, the more unique, the better). Also you don’t need to make only one game, see Final Game - The Movie, pretty impressive!
With my moviewatching experience, i learned that originality and the suprise factor is a must for a top video, quality has to be at max and effects must be much more than defaults, so start creating a storyboard to your movie! :) For my second movie i wrote 9 scenes, in each scene i have to do stuffs etc etc.. your choise!

IV. Tools:
Nowadays we need tools to get more quality in the movies, there are several types of tools, you must find all tools for your games and use them wisely :) for q3 i use seismovision, sdc, defrag and tga hook, they are very usefull, take this for instance: vecchi was so amazed when i told him that when you re-record a demo using sdc, the new demo has 125fps even if the original demo had 10-15fps :D
There is one tool that you must avoid at all costs, unless you don’t have any way to dump frames, it’s name: fraps! Unlike framedump, fraps requires a top computer to get “decent” quality, but there are many cons on this: lose frames very easly, brigthness/contrast are different from the game, resolution is low etc etc.. with dumpframes or cl_avidemo, i can get 1000fps @ 1280x1024 without losing one frame ;) More info in topic VII.
Nowadays many coders are making recam tools, these recams give an unique feeling just like defrag did when its recams revolutionise the world of gaming moviemaking ;) If you have lucky to have one of these.. use it and abuse it!

V. Demos:
Now i don’t care how you got them, but once your demos are selected it’s time to make the best of them ;) In my case i use ghosts, defrag ghosts = recams so i record my camera’s positions and they are stored in a gost file associated on the demo!
But beside the demo recam, i need to get a good config.. well google is the answer! I’ve learned all commands and made 15 super pro configs at the time.. 2 months of work, but now that makes my job so easier :) to record ghosts, change configs etc etc with the toutch of buttons i can do wonders in no time.. i would advise you to make them too!

VI. Music:
Before you extract any footage, it’s advised that you choose your music! If you like Linking park or SoaD then check this! Nowadays there are so many “junk movies” and most of them choose those songs.. avoid it.. i come to realise that even if i first didn’t liked live to fly soundtrack, but as it was unique in the type of music for that kind of movie, now i love to listen to that chilled music comparing to all drum n bass tricking movies.. (well i still love drum n bass for tricking but that track selection of hooker made the difference).
So let’s try to be original and choose tracks kinda according to the stylo of video (remember that sync is everything) and for slow footage/recams, slow music, for fast paced frags, heavy stuff! Or the other way around.. just be original ;) Now i have a brother who mixes all musics so what i have to do after, is to listen around 100 times that final mix and start to imagine the footage that i’ll put with that music (and then i did recams, but you can use what you have).. there is no better method for a perfect sync! Because it is a lot more difficult to sync a given images to a music!

VII. Extraction:
Now the heavy stuff! First get your graphic cards latest drivers ;) Then learn how to make it the best quality, like turning AA and AF etc etc, see my movie tips and with a hq config is time to extract those screenies! I extrack with tga hook then i import in vegas the sequece and it recognizes as a video clip.. If you don’t have such a tool, you have to use virtuadub!
What you have to take care? You have to know how much fps you want in your final movie, if it’s 30 like me then you can have 30fps extraction.. wrong! To achieve hq, you extract 300fps to blend 10fps in 1 or use a similar trick.. Also when you do slow motion 1/2 you need to capture double the framerate so you don’t lose any frame (i keep the same cl_avidemo and do slowmotions in the demo while extracting).
Back to virtuadub, this tool is one of the most amazing i’ve seen.. and it’s free ;) it does all related with a video except editing effects! You can import the sequence of images, use filters (reduction 1:2 quality, contrast, etcetc) and use a 100% loseless codec huffyuv to have your clips ready for edition!
If you want to zoom or slow motion you should keep larger files to edit so you wont lose quality!

VIII. Basic Editing:
Now is time to do a basic editing, the most comum programs are quake video maker (free), ulead video studio, video vegas and adobe premiere. My brother does most of it, i only know how to use basic vegas :)
If you never tried any edition program you should start with Ulead Video Studio, the interface guides you to make a movie in 7 steps (that's the way i learned), qvm i have the ideia that it's kinda the same (never tried), so make like 10s clips to test and learn the basic of basics! After that you have to make a choise: either you learn Adobe Style Editing, because after you learn 1, you know how to start in all ;) I've learned Vegas, it has a simplest interface in my opinion and with creativity you can acomplish many cool effects like Tricking IT2 which was made in Vegas only! If you want to use After effects, you should start with Premiere!
Well after the basic editing, we shall export with the lossless codec and wav sound, and import in another pro program. If you use premiere, then after effects recognizes the file type and imports all without rendering.

IX. Professional Toutch:
I’m a noob at After Effects :) ask Jabba :D But these movies which use AE are so amazing, i come to a conclusion that AE is the most complete “pro” tool you can ever find, there is such a wide field for you to let your imagination go to create unique and totally unexpected effects.. if you want quality, AE is a must! Don't forget to check out Kindred's In Depth After Effects Tutorials for quick and easy learning movies!
But this is not all, there is a wide range of incredible tools which take time to master.. mostly the 3D programs.. there is a simple 3D program with cool 3D objects/letters from ulead: Cool3D! For more complex stuff you can use 3D Studio Max, Maya, Particle Ilusion, Combustion, etc etc...

X. Final Files:
Now is time to call virtuadub again :) export from your edition program to huffyuv and wav, then import in VD. Now a goal of own-age.com is 20mb/s, you can have very good quality with less ex:ruination, as said in these foruns, no point of going over 720x480 (DVD) or more than 25-30fps (with blend you can achieve virtual 125fps easly)...
The most comum codecs are x-vid (needs a bit of skill to master), divx, wmv and a few others.. if you use a not so comum codec, be sure to give a free program to see it (like vlc which is the program with all codecs up-to-date, so if the movie doesn’t play here it is advised not to use it).. to see the best settings you need to do a lot of tests! Each movie needs its owns settings, also they are not game depent as own-age tested here.

nice nice tania! kudos!
though i have to disagree in one pount: aftereffects the top-notch effects-tool? I prefer combustion over AE for pretty much every effects-job..... though i have to give it to AE, the learning is a bit easier.

Will still upgrade more.. the edition part will be changed because that's a part i don't know that much about it.. pskycomanta, you're right i forgot about other cool programs.. cool3d, combustion, 3d studimax, maya etc etc (not my field), and mekaz, i had a terrible week, one of those we like to erase from our lifes.. but only 3 or 4 hours to make that thread :)

@Bunny: unfortunately it is not the case, look at some of the recents threads in the forum and you will see that Wussie has written a big tutorial as well on how to use the forum, and in less than 24hours there are 3 threads showing that the author didn't read it, even if it was on the top of the news in the homepage.

I must say i don't visit the forums often because most people just post crap but this tutorial is really great for beginners With this tutorial people will have a more inside look on how video editors work we all have other methods but we all begin with the same basics .i know it's not easy to make tutorials because you need to explain evrey aspect . I write tutorials myself for vegas , after effects , 3dsmax for Moviemakers. Most people know my SHINE tutorial in vegas it's beeing used in so many vids right now. ( explains on how to get the shine effect without using After Effects/premiere or trapcode plugins ) . and yeah like tania said if you have creativity and stuff you can pull of great things with vegas video let me give you an example ( tutorial coming soon )
this has been made entirely with vegas it animates as well and gives you a nice and cool

seriously now .. not every love is based on the idea to have sex with each other ... ive never seen her in real life nor talked to her on phone .. but she gave me alot .. more then just good matches or great tips .. her whole way to handle things to cheer people up .. i will never forget her. she become part of my life nothing more nothing less. sometimes people reach a status where a "thank you" barly sounds enough to explain all... |
